Ms Broome said it was hard to put into words how much it meant to the town of Katherine to have the brothers drafted to the Brisbane Lions. There were some similarities in Surfers Paradise’ win over Wilston Grange, but it was also a vastly different contest, as the Demons survived a late scare from a determined Gorillas’ outfit to win 9.11 (65) to 9.8 (62). TWO rounds remain in the Queensland Australian Football League (QAFL) competition, with minimal time for sides to try and squeeze into the top six spots for finals. "It's made it so much easier having [Keidean] around the club because, growing up, we've always been around each other, so when I got here, having him at the club made it so much easier.". Fyfe rarely wasted his touches and often hit teammates in a better position than himself. He combined well with Joel Jeffrey before the swingman was sent forward, with their reading of the ball in flight ensuring Brisbane had little avenues to go forward quickly. The winner will go a long way to booking a finals spot, whilst the loser will be in danger of missing out. The captain of the side, Johnston was a rock in defence at centre half-back. Broadbeach 17.18 (120) defeated Maroochydore 4.2 (26). Conversely, it could see Broadbeach come in the much fresher side. Broadbeach were great at locking the ball in their forward half and getting repeat inside 50s, so Briskey and the other Sherwood defenders were under constant pressure all day. His work-rate forward of centre was outstanding, and he could be seen pushing inside 50 from the wing to snare his second major, hardly breaking stride as he gobbled up the loose ball and slotted it home on the fly. He finished as one of the most prolific ball winners on the day, and kept his name in the hat as far as the Swans are concerned. Nicholls did not have the most productive game but he was still able to show his skill and talent with some nice spin moves and classy movement from the back half. Played a mixture between the wing and getting back to help the defence, Crozier was neat with his ball use and always looking to create run for the Lions. At the other end of the ladder, Morningside hosts Palm Beach Currumbin in the standout match for the round. In part one of our NAB AFL Draft preview, we will look at the top prospects from the Brisbane Lions Academy. He was recruited by Collingwood with the 17th draft pick in the 2020 AFL draft. In the final term, Briskey was pushed forward to give his side a strong leading option. He teamed up with Aidan Fyfe on a number of occasions, and was also strong defensively, laying a shepherd to enable his teammate to get the ball forward and then had a shot on goal himself that was pinched by Clay Cameron on the line in that third term. Coleman was a particular threat in transition with his clean hands, while over-ager Reville had a massive impact in the third term to give the Lions a sniff. When Michael plays with this type of confidence, he is very difficult to stop.Max Pescud (Surfers Paradise) [Gold Coast Suns Academy]Pescud was one of Surfers Paradise’s standout players on Saturday. Looking at some of the top performers around the league, Mt Gravatt – who has the bye this weekend – has Luke O’Sullivan who has been named in the best six of a possible seven times, snagging six goals in the process. Cashen-Harris had a mixed bag of a day with some very nice highlights, but also a few mistakes. For this week, we focused on some of the outstanding Northern Academy members running around in the QAFL for the various sides in the four matches. Thomas Thynne and Zac Harrison both impressed for Palm Beach Currumbin on the road, while Fraser Thurlow and Jaise Coleman stood tall for the losers. He was recruited by the Sydney Swans with the 5th draft pick in the 2020 AFL draft. He provided a goal assist to Jackson Barling in the second term with a hacked kick into the arc, and doubled his impact with some forward 50 ruck work. Crozier pushed forward on multiple occasions to take uncontested marks inside 50 and earn shots at goal. The Suns jumped them and utilised the breeze well, but it is easy to see why Lions fans are excited about this year’s crop of Academy talents. Considering the Lions will have an easier opponent next week, they know they will all but secure a top two spot with a win here, whilst Morningside will achieve that if the Panthers can get up. His second came 14 minutes into the next term, when he chucked it on his preferred left following a handball receive and did not mind it with an equally-fitting goal celebration to put his team up. Ventured up forward late in the third quarter, and after the Surfers Paradise Demons cut open the Sherwood Magpies defence as they went through the corridor, he finally kicked his first goal of the afternoon and his first for the game running into an open goal and kicking it on the goalline. He also used his pace to consistently get to ideal crumbing positions and break away from opponents when he got the ball. While he was a touch slow to truly build into the contest, Green began to show his best form after half time with some terrific overhead marking in tricky conditions. He always forced a second defender to go with him in the air to bring the ball to ground, thus creating more space for crumbers at his feet. Height: 181cm | Weight: 79kg | 6/8/02 With his speed, strength and agility, Coleman has proven to be a highly skilled forward and one of the most explosive talents in the 2020 draft. After this, he immediately looked into the centre corridor and found a teammate with a typical spearing kick. In a must-win clash for both sides, Wilston Grange will travel to Surfers Paradise in a battle of the bottom two teams. Gore showed great composure in the final term when he quickly got off the ground with the ball in hand to turn, deliver a short kick inside 50 and set up a goal.Aidan Fyfe (Broadbeach) [Gold Coast Suns Academy]Fyfe played at half-back for the Cats and had a solid game. A quick player who takes the game on, tackles, and marks with intent despite his light frame, he came undone a few times with his run but when he was up-and-running and taking bounces, he looked very sharp and even got some time through the midfield late in the game, winning a few clearances. Look for him to potentially rotate through the front six, or even into the centre bounces should the Magpies require a spark. Mt Gravatt vs. Morningside Nonetheless, his strength in the air saw him pull down a great contested mark leading out up forward, protecting the ball drop and then converting the set shot less than two minutes into the final term. Maroochydore had a vital win in Round 6 and were able to get four points clear of the bottom three, but cannot rest on their laurels if they are to be a serious threat in the competition, and continue to rise up the ladder. Matt Hammelmann slotted eight majors in a remarkable performance, while young talent Saxon Crozier kicked a couple alongside Reuben William for the winners. He was first sighted using the ball cleanly in the back half, staying composed to provide a refreshing point of difference in the largely-contested game. He is somewhat of an in-between size at 192cm and 87kg, allowing him to compete both aerially and at ground level. Cashen-Harris can often also win free kicks for opponents holding onto him, knowing he has the breakaway speed to shake off opponents. He tended to fumble a little at ground level and sometimes would rush his kicks, but he is good in marking contests in terms of his positioning and body work. That’ll come as a sigh of relief for all AFL clubs, as he put on a best on ground performance down back. Somehow he managed to gain distance, shake off his pursuers and launch a goal from 50m having beaten three opponents in the clear goal of the day. The diminutive over-ager was thrown right into the cut and thrust of midfield and hardly looked out of place. Thorne’s ability to shark the ball off hands and get his legs pumping to burst away was noticeable, and it helped set the tone for Sydney from where it mattered most. It was positive to see a good second effort as he bounced up and tackled Carter Michael, letting him know about it too. A bit more consistency and there is some definite positives. Skipper for the day, Jack Johnston was a rock at centre half-back, faring well aerially while also contributing to the Suns’ kick-heavy game in the back half at times. Fyfe found the ball all over the ground, working hard defensively and offensively. He saluted with his fifth 17 minutes into the third after missing a rushed shot earlier in the term, showing good positioning, leading out and marking 35m out to convert. THE 2020 Northern Academy Series got underway over the weekend, with prospects from the Brisbane Lions, Gold Coast Suns, GWS Giants, and Sydney Swans talent programs all looking to impress. Maybe the most unlucky Suns player not to be included in the AFL based academy, he has been a regular goal scorer in the QAFL and backed that up again. He spent time in the midfield throughout the day, where he read the ball nicely off the hands of the ruckmen and won some contested possessions and clearances. On a number of occasions he pushed hard down a wing or down the middle, and while he was still late, generally made good decisions with ball-in-hand. Bottom-age talent Kai Watts, and top-age inclusion for Round 2, Charlie Byrne are others to watch, with the latter having some incredible skill coming off half-back that he showed for the Murray Bushrangers last year. Aside from Pescud, Perry Lewis-Smith booted two goals in the win and was amongst the best with Cameron Topping and Daniel Charlesworth. Picking up plenty of intercept possessions in the last 30 minutes, he showed good hands and solid defensive pressure, including stopping a Maroochydore player in his tracks at half-forward and winning the ball back for his side. Both players rotated forward through midfield, and looked so dangerous whenever the ball entered their area. overall, Abberley played a starring role in a losing side. He ventured down back in the later stages of the fourth term and got his hands on the footy a few more times to limit the scoring of the Sherwood Magpies. In the second term, he took a nice intercept mark, won a 50-metre penalty and put through the set shot from about 40 out to kick his side’s first goal for the day. Of Gore’s five majors, the first game 15 minutes in the opening term when competition leading goalkicker Jordan Moncrieff leapt up in the goalsquare to take the contact and tap back to the loose Gore who kicked the easiest of majors. He started the game well by impacting clearances and creating some effective link-up play through the middle of the ground. Top-age Gold Coast Academy prospect Jack Johnston comes in at centre half-back and will have his hands full, while Riley Buckland is another to keep an eye on with his run and attack in the forward half. If the defence can restrict his influence on the game, and not allow too many of the smaller damaging forwards such as Blake Coleman to have an impact, that will be crucial. Oliver Henry (footballer) 1 Playing statistics correct to the end of round 4, 2021. Surfers Paradise 9.11 (65) defeated Wilston Grange 9.8 (62) He kicked two goals in the win, but it was the shared goalkicking load on the opposite side which was the difference. But the small community has another claim to fame: It's where two brothers, Keidean and Blake Coleman, forged their AFL dreams. Looking at his six majors, the first two came in the opening term, with a strong leap, one-grab clunk eight and a half minutes into the quarter with a 30m set shot on a slight angle sailing home. One of the Lions’ best throughout the day, he just kept trying to create off half-back and push up the ground. The likes of Coopa Steele and Joel Dunstall dug in to find plenty of the ball, while Harrison Grintell looked lively up forward, and Sam Frost was among a few solid defenders. Gold Coast Suns Academy prospect Rhys Nicholls featured in our Player Focus for the week while Bryce Retzlaff (three goals) and Blair Rubock (two) were the key goalkickers in a losing side. Turning the attention to the Q-Clash, and the Lions will be keen to turnaround their fortunes after a slow start saw them 37 points down before they put a score on the board. In the top of the table clash between the Cats and Panthers, Broadbeach overcame an inaccurate start of just 1.7 in the opening term, to boot 12.9 after that, and run away with a 50-point win. Another academy product, Toby Triffett comes in on the bench alongside Coleman, while Nathan Colenso has been named at full back, and 20-year-old Gippsland Power graduate Matthew McGannon roams through midfield. Clay Cameron and Connor Nutting both kicked three goals apiece, while Kwaby Boakye, Ethan Reeves and Max Lower were named the Cats’ best in the win. At the other end of the ladder, Wilston Grange and Labrador can mathematically still make it despite having just one win on the board after seven rounds, but need results to go their way.
